The best Reddit MCP servers, with or without API keys
Reddit has no MCP server of its own, and new API apps now need Reddit's approval. Here is how the open-source and hosted servers compare on keys, search, posting and clients.
Which Reddit MCP server should I use?
A Reddit MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor search Reddit posts and comments, find subreddits and read whole threads. Reddit does not publish one of its own (checked October 2026), so you choose between open-source servers you run yourself, which are free but often need Reddit API credentials that Reddit now approves app by app, and hosted servers that handle Reddit access for you.
What a Reddit MCP server does
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard AI clients use to call outside tools. A Reddit MCP server exposes Reddit as tools your agent can call: search posts, search comments, find communities, read a thread, list what is new. You ask a question in plain words, the agent picks the calls, reads the results and replies with a summary and links.
People use a Reddit MCP server to:
- Find the subreddits where their buyers talk, sized by how active they are
- Read a community's rules before anyone posts or replies
- Find recent threads where someone asks for a tool like theirs
- Mine posts and comments for pain points, objections and customer language
- Collect complaints about a competitor and the reasons people switch
- Check every new post in a handful of subreddits since yesterday
Reddit API access now needs approval
In November 2025 Reddit closed self-service access to its data API. Under its Responsible Builder Policy, new apps must request access and be approved before they get a client ID and secret. That shapes every option below:
- Servers that need credentials depend on that approval. If you do not already have a Reddit app, expect to apply and wait.
- Keyless servers have limits. Servers with no credentials read Reddit's public pages or feeds, with lower rate limits and fewer fields. Reddit's developer help page says requests from a hosted provider's IP range need a valid OAuth token, and jordanburke's README says Reddit now answers unauthenticated API requests with an error, so its anonymous mode falls back to public RSS feeds.
- Hosted servers handle access themselves. You connect a URL and sign in, and the vendor deals with Reddit.
The servers, compared

reddit-mcp-buddy
reddit-mcp-buddy is a TypeScript server (MIT) you run with npx -y reddit-mcp-buddy, Docker or a Claude Desktop extension. With no credentials it browses a subreddit from Reddit's public feed, with scores and comment counts missing. Add a Reddit app's client ID and secret and it can search Reddit, read a post with its comments and analyse a user, at higher rate limits. Its README says it never posts, comments or changes anything on Reddit.
Best for: Browsing subreddits locally with no setup, and full search once you have Reddit credentials.
eliasbiondo/reddit-mcp-server
eliasbiondo/reddit-mcp-server is a Python server (MIT) you run with uvx reddit-no-auth-mcp-server, and it needs no API keys or account. It searches all of Reddit or one subreddit, lists a subreddit's hot, top, new or rising posts, reads a post with its comment tree and reads a user's recent posts and comments. It lists no tools that write to Reddit.
Best for: Free local search with no keys, on your own machine.
adhikasp/mcp-reddit
adhikasp/mcp-reddit is an MIT-licensed server you run with uvx from its GitHub repo, or install through Smithery. It fetches the hot threads in any subreddit and reads a post in full with its comments, including text, link and gallery posts. Its README describes no search tool and no way to post.
Best for: A small local server that reads what is hot in the subreddits you name.
jordanburke/reddit-mcp-server
jordanburke/reddit-mcp-server is a TypeScript server (MIT) for npx, Docker or a Claude Desktop extension, and it can also run over HTTP so you can host it yourself. With a Reddit client ID and secret it reads posts, comments, users and subreddits and searches Reddit; add your username and password and it can create posts, reply, edit and delete. Its README says it is designed with the Responsible Builder Policy in mind, with rate limiting and duplicate detection on by default and no voting or private message tools.
Best for: Developers who have Reddit API access and want their agent to post and reply from their own account.
Composio
Composio's Reddit toolkit is a hosted MCP server, or a REST API, that connects your Reddit account with OAuth through Composio's managed app, so you need no Reddit app of your own. Its tools search posts and comments, search subreddits, read a subreddit's posts and rules, read a post's comments, and create, edit and delete posts and comments. Its free Hobby plan includes 100,000 tool calls a month, up to 20,000 of them through managed apps such as Reddit.
Best for: Developers who want hosted Reddit access with posting, alongside other apps on the same platform.
Gumloop
Gumloop's Reddit MCP server searches and monitors subreddits, posts and comments, and researches communities. Gumloop lists Claude and Cursor as well as its own automation builder. Its page does not describe how sign-in works or what it costs, so check Gumloop's docs before you pick it.
Best for: Teams already building automations in Gumloop.
Manifold
Manifold's Reddit MCP server is hosted at https://mcp.manifoldmcp.com/mcp. You sign in with OAuth or send an API key, and there are no Reddit API keys of your own to apply for. Its tools search posts and comments, find subreddits with their subscriber counts, read a community's size and rules, read a thread and its comments, and list every new post in up to 10 subreddits since a time, with the coverage it reached reported for each. The same server also covers SEO, AI answers, social platforms, ad libraries and leads.
Manifold is pay per call: every workspace starts with 500 free credits, then Pro starts at $20/mo. See the Reddit tools docs for what each tool returns and costs.
Honest limits: Manifold does not post, comment or vote. Your agent drafts a reply if you ask, and you post it from your own account.
Best for: Reddit research in any client, including Claude on the web and ChatGPT, with no Reddit app to register.
Search finds examples, new posts let you count
Whatever server you pick, Reddit search is ranked and never returns everything, so use it to find examples, not to count mentions. To see everything posted in a community, list its new posts instead, and check that the window you asked for was covered.
Self-hosted or hosted
- Local servers stay local. A server that runs over stdio works in desktop clients on your machine, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor, not in Claude on the web, on your phone or in ChatGPT, unless you host it behind a public URL yourself.
- You maintain it. Updates, and breakages when Reddit changes its endpoints, are yours to handle.
- Hosted servers work in every client that supports remote MCP servers, and you trade a monthly plan or per call pricing for not running anything.
A typical local setup in Claude Desktop is a few lines in claude_desktop_config.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"reddit": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "reddit-mcp-buddy"]
}
}
}A hosted server is one URL. In Claude, open Settings → Connectors, choose Add custom connector and paste it; Cursor and ChatGPT have their own steps, covered in the client guides.

Example prompts
These work with any server that can search Reddit and read threads.
Find communities. "Which subreddits talk about bookkeeping for freelancers? Rank them by how active they are and summarise each one's rules on self promotion."
Threads to reply to. "Find threads from the last week where people ask for a Notion alternative. Skip locked or archived ones and give me the links."
Pain points. "Search Reddit posts and comments from the past year about onboarding in SaaS tools. Group the complaints into themes with a verbatim quote and link for each."
Competitor complaints. "What do people on Reddit dislike about HubSpot, and why do they say they switched? Quote the comments and link the threads."
Run this in your agent
Connect Manifold to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, then paste this prompt.
Find the subreddits where people ask for a tool like ours, check their rules on self promotion, and list this week's threads worth replying to, with links.
