The best MCP servers for SEO work in Claude Code

Claude Code is a terminal agent that can read and edit your site's code. When you connect SEO MCP servers to it, your agent pulls live keyword, SERP, backlink and Search Console data, then fixes titles, meta descriptions, internal links, schema or content in the same session. This guide compares the servers for Claude Code SEO work: the hosted options that handle setup for you, local servers that run on your machine, and which one to use for each job.

What are the best MCP servers for SEO work in Claude Code?

The best SEO MCP server for Claude Code is the one that matches what you already pay for and how you want to work. Use Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking if you already have a subscription. Use OpenSEO for a low-cost hosted plan that includes Search Console. Use Playwright MCP for rendered pages and JavaScript-heavy sites. Use DataForSEO for pay as you go at API prices with no monthly subscription. Use a community Search Console server for your own site's data, or Manifold for hosted pay per call across SEO, Search Console, Bing, AI visibility, and other marketing data, with no API keys of your own.

MCP in Claude Code: remote servers and local servers

Claude Code connects to MCP servers in two ways: remote HTTP servers and local stdio servers. The method changes how you add the server and where it runs.

Remote HTTP servers are hosted endpoints you add with claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url>. They run on the vendor's infrastructure. You sign in with OAuth by running /mcp in Claude Code, or pass an API key with --header. Most hosted SEO servers use this method.

Local stdio servers run as processes on your machine, started with npx or uvx. You add them with claude mcp add <name> -- <command>, passing any credentials with --env before the --. They need setup on each machine and can access your local filesystem and environment, which suits servers that need your own Google Cloud project or credentials.

Every claude mcp add command takes a --scope flag. The default, local, keeps the server private to you in the current project. user makes it available in all your projects. project writes it to a .mcp.json file at the repo root that your team can commit, so everyone on the project gets the same SEO servers. Claude Code asks each person to approve project servers before it uses them.

Claude Code and SEO: what your agent can do

Once you connect an SEO MCP server, Claude Code can:

  • Pull Search Console queries where your site ranks on page two, read the page in your repo, and rewrite the title and meta description to improve click-through rate.
  • Run a technical crawl of your site, find broken internal links, and fix them in your templates or static pages.
  • Check the live SERP for a target keyword, analyze what ranks, and draft a new page optimized for the query based on competitor content gaps.
  • Find keyword opportunities from a seed term, cluster them by intent, and generate content briefs for each cluster saved as files in your repo.
  • Audit backlink profiles, identify link prospects, and draft outreach emails or update your link-building tracker.

The workflow is: ask a question, Claude Code calls the SEO tools, analyzes the data, and edits your code to implement the fix or writes the brief you need.

Drawn from the comparison table above. Search Console means your own site's data. Manifold's Search Console, Bing and Analytics tools cost 0 credits per call.

Ahrefs MCP

Ahrefs MCP is a hosted server at https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp. Connect with OAuth, which creates an MCP-scoped API key. You need Lite ($129/mo) or higher. Lite includes 200,000 API units per month, with every call costing at least 50 units.

Add it to Claude Code with:

Terminal
claude mcp add --transport http ahrefs https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp

For competitor research, your agent can find keyword gaps, compare backlink profiles, check where competitors rank, and see which keywords they rank for that you don't. For your own site, use it with Search Console or Google Analytics to pair Ahrefs' external data with your first-party metrics.

For setup and troubleshooting, see the Ahrefs MCP setup guide.

Best for: Teams already on Ahrefs who want competitor SEO data from their existing subscription.

Limits: Requires an Ahrefs plan and API units. No traffic estimates, Search Console, or AI visibility data.

Semrush MCP

Semrush MCP is a hosted server at https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp. Sign in with OAuth or an API key. You need Semrush One Starter or Pro+, or SEO Classic Pro or Guru, each with 50,000 API units, or Semrush One Advanced or SEO Classic Business with an API units package.

Add it to Claude Code with:

Terminal
claude mcp add --transport http semrush https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp

Semrush lists Claude Code setup in their official docs. For competitor research, your agent can identify top organic competitors by keyword overlap, find keyword gaps, compare backlink profiles, and pull SERP data. Traffic and market estimates need a separate Trends API plan.

For setup and troubleshooting, see the Semrush MCP setup guide.

Best for: Teams already on Semrush who want competitor SEO data from their existing subscription.

Limits: Requires a Semrush plan and API units. Traffic data needs Trends API. No Search Console or AI visibility data.

SE Ranking MCP

SE Ranking MCP is a hosted server at https://api.seranking.com/mcp. Sign in with OAuth or an API key. MCP is included in every API plan: a Wallet from $50 for 250K credits that never expire, a standalone API plan from $179/mo billed annually, or an API add-on to an SE Ranking subscription. A 14-day trial gives you 100K credits.

Add it to Claude Code by pasting the URL or with:

Terminal
claude mcp add --transport http seranking https://api.seranking.com/mcp

SE Ranking lists more than 180 tools covering keywords, backlinks, domain analysis, audits, SERP, and AI search visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews.

Best for: Testing with a trial before committing, or buying a prepaid balance that never expires. SEO competitor research plus AI visibility tracking in one server.

Limits: No Search Console data.

OpenSEO

OpenSEO is a hosted server at https://app.openseo.so/mcp. Sign in with OAuth, or for CI and headless machines pass an API key from your OpenSEO account as a bearer token with --header. It covers keyword research, SERP inspection, local business research, competitive search intelligence, domain research, backlink overview, saved keywords, rank tracking, shared project context, and Google Search Console performance and URL inspection. AI visibility tools check ChatGPT answers and compare answers across models.

Add it to Claude Code with:

Terminal
claude mcp add --transport http openseo https://app.openseo.so/mcp

OpenSEO also offers a Claude Code plugin that adds the server and its public SEO skills together. The Base plan is $10/mo and includes $10 of usage each month. Search Console data does not use that allowance, and a free trial includes $0.50 of credits.

Best for: A low-cost hosted server with Search Console, rank tracking and AI visibility.

Limits: Requires an OpenSEO subscription after the trial. No Bing Webmaster Tools data.

Playwright MCP

Playwright MCP is Microsoft's local stdio server for browser automation. It runs on your machine with npx @playwright/mcp@latest and gives Claude Code access to rendered pages and JavaScript-heavy sites through Playwright's accessibility tree.

Add it to Claude Code with:

Terminal
claude mcp add playwright -- npx @playwright/mcp@latest

For SEO, use it to open JavaScript-rendered pages, check how content appears after client-side rendering, and spot content that a crawler reading raw HTML would miss.

Best for: Rendering JavaScript-heavy pages and sites where server-side crawlers can't see the full content.

Limits: Runs locally, not hosted. No keyword or backlink data. Needs Node.js.

DataForSEO MCP

DataForSEO MCP runs hosted at https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp (OAuth in Claude and ChatGPT, or Basic auth with your API login and password) or locally via npx dataforseo-mcp-server. Pay as you go with a $50 minimum payment and a $1 free trial credit. Balance does not expire. Covers SERP, keywords, backlinks, on-page, AI optimization, and business data. Traffic data means search traffic estimates, not full channel mix.

To run the local server in Claude Code, pass your API login and password as environment variables:

Terminal
claude mcp add dataforseo --env DATAFORSEO_USERNAME=your_login --env DATAFORSEO_PASSWORD=your_password -- npx -y dataforseo-mcp-server

For a complete setup walkthrough and troubleshooting guide, see the DataForSEO MCP setup guide.

Best for: Pay as you go at API prices if you can manage your own credentials and local setup, or if you want no monthly subscription.

Limits: Traffic estimates cover search traffic only. No Search Console or first-party data.

Google Search Console (community servers)

Community-built servers like AminForou/mcp-gsc run locally via Python and uvx. You need a Google Cloud project with the Search Console API enabled and an OAuth client or service account. It is free and covers your own site only.

Add it to Claude Code after setting up credentials with:

Terminal
claude mcp add gsc --env GSC_OAUTH_CLIENT_SECRETS_FILE=/full/path/to/client_secrets.json -- uvx mcp-search-console

Your agent can list properties, pull search analytics by query and page, inspect URLs for indexing issues, manage sitemaps, and compare performance between time periods.

Best for: Reading your own site's Search Console data without paying for a hosted server.

Limits: Needs a Google Cloud project and credentials. No competitor or keyword research data.

Manifold

Manifold is a hosted MCP server with no API keys of your own. Its SEO tools cover:

Keywords and SERPs: seo_search_keywords (keyword ideas with volume, difficulty, CPC, intent), seo_get_keyword_metrics, seo_get_serp (live SERP with AI Overview), seo_get_position, seo_get_ranked_keywords, seo_get_serp_competitors and seo_get_keyword_gap.

Backlinks: seo_get_backlinks, seo_get_backlink_summary, seo_get_referring_domains and seo_get_domain_ratings (returns Ahrefs Domain Rating).

Technical: seo_run_technical_crawl (site audit for broken links, duplicate titles, non-indexable pages) and seo_get_page (on-page SEO for one URL).

Search Console, Bing and Analytics: The console_* tools cover Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and the analytics_* tools cover Google Analytics. Connect your own accounts, and these tools cost 0 credits per call. See the Search Console MCP page for setup.

AI visibility: aeo_run_ai_answers checks which brands ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity mention and cite for a prompt. aeo_get_site_readiness checks whether AI engines can read your site. See the AI visibility MCP page for more.

Add it to Claude Code with:

Terminal
claude mcp add --transport http manifold https://mcp.manifoldmcp.com/mcp

Then run /mcp in Claude Code and sign in. Add --scope project to share it with your team through .mcp.json. For Search Console, Bing and Analytics, open Connections in the Manifold app and sign in to Google or Bing. Full steps are in the Claude Code setup guide.

Manifold is pay per call. Every workspace gets 500 free credits. After that, Pro starts at $20/mo. The tools documentation shows what each tool returns and costs. Search Console, Bing and Analytics tools cost 0 credits.

Honest limits: SEO data comes from DataForSEO. No first-party link index like Ahrefs. No rank-tracking projects like SE Ranking or Semrush.

Best for: One hosted server across SEO, Search Console, Bing, AI visibility, and other marketing data (social, Reddit, ads, leads). No API keys of your own, pay per call.

Example Claude Code SEO prompts

Your agent pulls SEO data and then edits your code to implement fixes. Here are five prompts you can paste into Claude Code:

Search Console quick wins:

"Pull Search Console queries for oursite.com in the US where we rank 8 to 20, last 28 days. For the top 10 by impressions, read each ranking page in the repo, suggest title and meta description improvements, and show me the edits before applying them."

Technical crawl and fixes:

"Run a technical crawl of example.com, 500 pages max. List the top 10 issues by page count. For broken internal links, find them in the templates and fix them. Show me the changes."

SERP-driven page creation:

"Get the top 10 Google results for 'best project management software for small teams' in the US, including the AI Overview. Analyze what ranks, identify content gaps our competitors miss, and draft a new page optimized for the query. Save it as content/blog/best-project-management-software-for-small-teams.md."

Keyword clustering and briefs:

"Find 50 keyword ideas for 'email marketing automation' in the US with volume, difficulty and intent. Cluster them by intent and topic. For the top 3 clusters, generate content briefs and save them as separate files in briefs/."

Backlink prospecting:

"Pull referring domains for competitor.com with their domain rating. Show the top 20. For domains linking to them but not to us, draft outreach email templates and save them to outreach/templates.md."

Which SEO MCP server should you use in Claude Code?

Pick by what you already pay for and how you want to manage credentials.

You already have Ahrefs or Semrush. Use their MCP servers. Your agent uses the data you already pay for, and OAuth setup is fast.

You want a trial before committing. SE Ranking's 14-day trial gives you 100K credits. Test it, then decide whether to buy a Wallet or a subscription.

You want pay as you go with no monthly subscription. DataForSEO MCP charges per API call, $50 minimum payment, $1 trial, balance never expires.

You want a hosted server with Search Console and AI visibility. Use OpenSEO or Manifold. Both are hosted and include Search Console. OpenSEO is a $10/mo plan, Manifold charges per call with 500 free credits.

You need to render JavaScript-heavy pages. Use Playwright MCP. It runs locally and handles client-side rendering.

You only need your own site's Search Console data. Use a community server like mcp-gsc. It is free and runs locally.

You want one server for SEO, Search Console, Bing, AI visibility, and other marketing data, with per-call pricing and no API keys of your own. Manifold charges per call and every workspace gets 500 free credits. Search Console, Bing and Analytics calls cost 0 credits.

Run this in your agent

Connect Manifold to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, then paste this prompt.

Pull Search Console queries for oursite.com in the US where we rank 8 to 20, last 28 days. For the top 10 by impressions, read each ranking page in the repo, suggest title and meta description improvements, and show me the edits before applying them.

Questions people ask

How do I add an MCP server to Claude Code?

For remote HTTP servers, run claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url> in the terminal, then /mcp in Claude Code to sign in. For local stdio servers, run claude mcp add <name> -- <command>, passing any credentials with --env before the --, for example claude mcp add playwright -- npx @playwright/mcp@latest. After adding, /mcp in Claude Code shows which servers are connected.

Should I use a remote or a local SEO server in Claude Code?

Use a remote server if you want hosted setup and OAuth, such as Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking or Manifold. Use a local server if you need to run on your own machine with your own credentials, such as Playwright for rendering or a community Search Console server with your Google Cloud project.

Can Claude Code fix SEO issues in my site's code after pulling the data?

Yes. Claude Code can read and edit your site's code in the same session as the audit. After running a technical crawl, it can fix missing canonical tags, duplicate titles in templates, broken internal links, sitemaps and missing alt text in the repo. That's the payoff of Claude Code for SEO: data and code changes together.

Do I need an Ahrefs or Semrush subscription?

Only if you use their MCP servers. Ahrefs MCP requires Lite ($129/mo) or higher. Semrush MCP needs Semrush One Starter ($199/mo) or Pro+. If you do not have a subscription, use DataForSEO ($50 minimum, $1 trial, no monthly subscription), SE Ranking (14-day trial with 100K credits), OpenSEO (from $10/mo, free trial), or Manifold (hosted, 500 free credits per workspace, no API keys of your own).

How do I share an SEO server setup with my team?

Claude Code supports project-scoped servers through a .mcp.json file in your repo that your team can commit. Add a server with --scope project instead of the default local scope, and Claude Code writes the config to .mcp.json at the repo root. Everyone who checks out the repo gets the same server setup, and Claude Code asks each person to approve project servers before using them.
